Video shows men surrendering on toll gate in Lekki shootout that left 3 cops dead

On December 12, at around 5 p.m., a dispute between a police team and a motley crew of suspected robbers on a busy toll gate in Lekki, Lagos State, resulted in a shootout that left three policemen and four members of the robber gang dead.

Following the incident, human rights groups and the police union have decried the shooting of civilians by police officers, with a vote of no confidence passed against the Lagos State police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, and a local lawyer claiming that his clients had allegedly been shot while surrendering to the police.

Two months later, video footage obtained by Rights Watch from the scene has revealed that a sixth person was shot and later died after being taken to the hospital. The man, a 39-year-old trader, had surrendered at the point of the shoot-out and appeared to be walking toward the police with his hands in the air and without resistance.
