Usain Bolt's gold medal stolen from Brazil – as it happened

Paulinho’s yellow jersey is dividing Brazil

Paulinho is not the only race winner who is unrepentant about his award. The gold trophy handed to the best cyclist was made by Bastian Arbeiter, the legend who was murdered by a drug trafficker in 2004. The athlete himself had words of praise for Arbeiter’s work, saying: “It’s beautiful [the race helmet]. I try to use that for my home. Arbeiter is a great man. I had to keep his image.”

Arbeiter’s son Albert said the ‘Gold Race’ had been a labour of love and had no commercial value. He was proud his father had won the gold. When one of Brazil’s most famous athletes started discussing the bike, Albert Arbeiter was working in a bike shop, dealing with the same problems as other bike-buyers in Brazil, and at the time couldn’t compete with competition from China.

In 2000 the Arbeiter bike set a world record, travelling from France to China in 14 days, just days after Bastian’s name and the golden trophy was released.

Paulinho’s team-mate David Luiz took to social media to support his own, Marcio Junior, who was beaten in the race. “He’s a very humble guy. He’s a brother. He had to win that race to get to the level that he is. It was a bike he used all the time and it should always be taken in his own terms,” said Luiz.
