Dogs will soon be allowed onboard pre-flights at C.D.C. Ellingham Airport in the United Kingdom, but owners will still need to walk their four-legged companions in the terminal.

As for the restrictions around flying their four-legged companions with their family and friends, that includes no more than a 10-minute respite from walking inside the terminal for two hours per departing flight.

The company’s plans will let owners can their dogs on pre-flight aircraft without requiring a kennel in the terminal, but during the time spent outside the terminal the dogs will be forced to stay locked up.

The company’s policies have brought criticism from some campaigners and critics, who question whether the airline can accommodate the short respite allowed by its rules during times when the family is in transit.

Amid the controversy the airport owner, C.D.C. Ellingham Group, has invited its critics to the future terminal site to see what its policies will be like.

The new terminal, to be built in 2010, will have an area reserved for boarding its animals and three “antidote zones” to allow assistance animals to be brought in if the owner needs them.

The idea was encouraged by the airport’s new Future Terminal Concept concept.

“The Team is looking forward to the community discussing and voicing their views on these proposals and will take into account any comments received before making a decision,” a spokesperson from the group said.

Most airlines will not let their pets onboard as they make their home in the cabin, where they can eat, sleep and splash around freely.

But many loyal owners want their pets to enjoy more travel freedoms.

Britain’s second-busiest airport, at Gatwick, also boasts a “pod cat” ramp that is designed to allow cats to disembark while their owners are off on vacation.
