Huskies beat Fighting Irish 73-68 in college basketball

( dpa ) – Kyle Wiltjer scored a career-high 31 points to lead the No. 18 University of Connecticut Huskies to a 73-68 victory against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.

It was Connecticut’s first win in seven games against the Fighting Irish.

Robert Archibald added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who scored the final 12 points. They shot 55 per cent in the second half and 57 per cent for the game.

Shabazz Napier chipped in with 10 points. UConn dominated the glass, winning the battle on the glass 44-32.

Taj Gibson led the Irish with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Pat Connaughton scored 13 points. But the Fighting Irish played without season leader Pat Connaughton and Jerian Grant, who are out with injuries.

The Huskies beat the Fighting Irish 54-45 earlier this season in Hartford, Connecticut.

UConn also beat Northern Iowa 77-70 last week in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Huskies play again in January against Indiana, a team they routed 60-27 on Dec. 5.

Notre Dame fell to 4-3 in January games.
