Winter, the dolphin that starred in the Disney movie Dolphin Tale, has died at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Florida.

The 2-year-old white dolphin was suffering from mange – mites on the skin – and had suffered through illness for months, officials said.

It was thought to be the first death in the “aquatic animal hospital” since it opened in 1998.

Winter was rescued by wildlife officers after getting entangled in a fishing net.

They freed her after trying to save her with tongs and cattle prods.

She had a problematic relationship with human beings after being injured by a human hand and having to learn how to love again, moviegoers were told.

Winter was released after years of rehabilitation.

“Sometimes the healing process takes time,” said the aquarium’s executive director Dan Harris.

“However, Winter will be remembered for her brave and dignified character and will long be a source of inspiration to millions around the world.”

The film, which was a 2009 family-friendly drama starring Morgan Freeman and Harry Connick Jr, has become a sleeper hit and remains popular with young audiences and in the language section.

The dolphin’s “entirehearted way of embracing life and its difficulties is unsurpassed by any dolphin we have ever known, and in fact may be the most remarkable trait ever witnessed in a dolphin of any kind”, Mr Harris said.

About 20 million people in more than 170 countries watched the movie, Disney said.
